Driving is the discipline of having a horse pull a device. I say device, because this can include anything from a log to a carriage to farm implement.
Wendy started driving because she loved the draft horse breeds, and this is what they do best!
Currently our ranch has all manner of things for our draft beasts to pull. We have stone boats to train the horses, the training cart shown in the picture above, show carts for competitions, and passenger carts for charity or special events. We even started using farm implements such as a 'Spring Tooth Harrow' for turning the ground, since tractors and quads don't always get the job done (or at least they aren't as much fun!).
Driving has been a long time passion for Wendy and she is determined to teach others about it. Wendy does small private lessons for everyone from small children to retired adults. She'll teach theory to practice, or you can just come do a ride along with her!
Each year we have a few events that we live for, then we'll jump into others as they come up and as we have time. This is a hobby for us and not a job, this is how we ensure we never lose the joy of doing this.
Georgia National Fair:
We had our first showing with the Georgia Draft Horse Association at the Georgia National Fair in October 2023, just 8 months after relocating the ranch to Georgia. One heck of an event, we had a great time and did pretty well with several Blue Ribbons and another Grand Champion Stallion for Liam!
Kentucky Derby Parade (Pegasus Parade):
Wendy was invited to ride our stallion Liam side saddle in the Kentucky Derby Pegasus Parade in 2024 just after we settled in Georgia. This was a lifetime dream finally fulfilled for her and we look forward to our next opportunity to join them (we will miss 2025 due to our foaling schedule).
Aiken Trials:
What A Blast!! Wendy has been invited to participate in the Aiken Trials at the Aiken Training Track in their annual Side Saddle Exhibition Race since 2024 with our Clydesdale Stallion Liam. This is definitely a 'for-fun' event for us, imaging a Clydesdale racing a 1/4 against OTTBs... At least Wendy took home the Best Turnout award with Liam!
Aiken Hounds:
Wendy has taken several of our herd out to Aiken Hounds events. She can often be seen at the Spring Hunter Pace and showing off her costume closet at the Closing Hunt / St. Patrick's Hunt.
California State Fair:
We no longer present here since we moved out to Georgia. Wendy had been participating in the State Fair since 1993, and riding sidesaddle there since 2012. We were lucky enough to be invited back each year and truly loved participating. It was a LOT of work as we perform each night during the entire 17 days. The theme was different every year and presented new and unique challenges for both us and our horses. We've done everything from sidesaddle demonstrations, to dressing up as penguins, to chasing damsels as a headless horseman, to racing carriages in the arena, to using farm equipment to prep the arena between shows.
Draft Horse Classic:
We no longer present here since we moved out to Georgia, but it was a highlight of our event year. Wendy participated at this event in Grass Valley CA from 2014 - 2022. We were rather successful showing there and had quite a fun time. The ranch is most proud of Liam's Grand Champion Stallion and Wendy's 1st Place Ladies Pleasure ribbons. Personally, we were most grateful for the friends we made over the years.
We only participate in a few scheduled events, more often we can be found somewhere at the last minute as a late entry.
We are so fortunate to live in an area with miles of horse friendly roads! The S Shingle Rd area provides miles of dirt road to enjoy with zero automobile traffic.
We try to organize a trip to the Point Reyes area at least once a year. There is a great horse camp there and a wonderful horse friendly Bed and Breakfast.
We head up to Oroville Dam a few times a year. They have miles and miles of great trails and a wonderful horse camp ground, with warm showers!
